PAGE THIRTY-TWO OBITUARIES PLAINFIELD, N. COURIER-NEWS, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 10, 1955 Telephone Plainfield 6-8000 Henry E. Bliss Dies, Bibliographer, Author Henry Evelyn Bliss, 85, of 602 E. Front retired college librarian, bibliographer and author, died yesterday (Aug. 1955) his home.

Mr. Bliss retired as assistant librarian of the City College of New York in 1940 and had resided in Plainfield since 1952. Mr. Bliss was one of the foremost contributors the systemizing of bibliographic classification, having devoted 50 years to this study. He endeavored to, systemize all the branches knowledge and study in accordance with modern scientific and educational thought.

Dad First Car Fatality Born in New York, he was the son of the late Henry Hale and Evelina Matilda Davis, Bliss. His father was struck killed by an early model auto at the age of 69, in New York in 1899, becoming America's first automobile victim. Mr. Bliss attended CCNY for three years. After a short business career he returned to College, where he was made deputy librarian.

'He found the existing classification systems inadequate in view of the rapid developments in science, technology, literature and the social sciences. When City College moved its campus to Convent Ave. in 1905, Mr. Bliss was lowed to rearrange the library according to his own system. He was the author of "The Organization Knowledge System of Sciences," "The Organization of Knowledge in Libraries" "A System of Bibliographic which was later expanded to a four -volume work, "A Bibliographic Although Mr.

Bliss' books have been widely used for study in this country, his system never adopted except at City College. In many cases, this was due to the expense of reclassification. Approximately 50 libraries in England and in Eng(lish-speaking countries have adopted the system, however. Also Wrote Poetry In addition to his contributions to library science, Mr. Bliss was the author of a volume of poetry entitled "Better Late Than Never." He also contributed articles to library, educational and philosophical periodicals and to "Encyclopedia Americana." At the age of 83, Mr.

Bliss estimated he walked nearly miles a year and claimed he had not had a cold since 1947. Although he spent most of his lifetime in Manhattan, he had also lived for several years in Pasadena, and later for five years in Winter Park, Fla. He was a member of the Special Library Association, the Library Association of the United dom, the British Poetry Association and the University Club of Winter Park. Mr. Bliss' wife, the former Ellen de Koster, a teacher at Hunter College in New York, died in 1943.

He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Wolcott C. Treat of the Ethel Walker School, two sons, John Hale Bliss of 848 Coolidge this city, and Conrad de Koster Bliss Newtown, Ohio; four grandchildren and one greatgrandchild. Funeral services will be held IN Bargains EATING SPECIALS FOR FRI. and SAT.

9, 1955) at his home Mill following a long illness. Mr. Sheehan, who never married, was born in High Bridge and had lived here his entire He was a son the late Michael and Mary Smith Sheehan. A retired molder local plant of the Wharton and Steel Company, Mr. Sheehan started work as a water boy for the company.

He retired about 18 years ago after 45 years service. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church and the Holy Name Society. He is survived by a sister, Miss Margaret Sheehan, at home, and another sister, Mrs. Annie Devlin, also of High A Requiem Mass be offered by the Rev.

George A. Duff, pastor, at St. Joseph's Church Friday at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Ann's Church Cemetery, Hampton.

He had been a patient there several months. His wife, Katherine, died several years ago, and Mr. Aber is survived by no near relatives. He lived in Bloomfield until his last illness, moving there after retiring from farming several years ago. ROBERT M.

Russell Dead At 55 Westfield Ricketson Borden Russell, 55, of 318 S. Euclid died Monday (Aug. 1955) in his summer home Shelter Island, N. of a heart attack. Born in Boston, Mr.

Russell lived in Westfield about 33 years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church; the Community Players of Westfield; Shelter Island Yacht Club; the American Legion, New Brunswick Post; member of the Westfield Tennis Club for many years. Mr. Russell was a director of the Commonwealth Bank of Metuchen and was a contract spe. cialist in Radio Division of way, made City, by Western Electric 120 Broademployed for about 11 years.

He was a veteran of World War 1, serving in the Navy. Before World War 2, he was a former manager of the Studebaker Agency of J. Arthur Applegate, New Brunswick, for about 15 years. is survived by his widow, Miriam Towl Russell and three Mrs. Jean Russell Westfield; Miss Letty Young Russell of New York City, and Mrs.

Elizabeth Russell Collins of Boston, and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be private. The family asks that no flowers be sent. Rev. S.

Travers, Retired Pastor High Bridge--The Rev. Stephen Travers, former pastor of Spruce Run Lutheran Church, died Sunday (Aug. 7, 1955) in his home in Dividing Creek in Cumberland County. He would have been 93 years old on Sept. 21.

The Rev. Mr. Travers served one of the longest pastorates in the history of the 180-year-old church. He was pastor at the nearby Lutheran Church from 1900 to 1905 and again from 1927 to 1947, when he retired at age of 85. He also served at one time as pastor of St.

James Church (Straw Church) near Phillipsburg and various other charges. He was a native of New state and a member of the New York Lutheran Synod. His only survivor is his widow, Edna. Two sons died before him. Funeral services will be held today at 8 p.m.

Mr. Barker was a member of the Kings Highway Baptist Church of Brooklyn and was active in church work, having been secretary and chairman of the board of trustees. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War 2.

He was born in Pottersville 58 years ago and was a graduate of Bernards High School, Bernardsville, and 1 Pratt Institute, Brooklyn. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Barker. He was an electrical engineer, employed by Consolidated Edison Co.

of New York for 33 years. He is survived by his wife, Ethel Alpaugh Barker, and one son, Leland at home; one daughter, Mrs. Robert M. Cairns of Lynbrook, L. thre grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs.
