He was 77. He was born in New Brunswick and had lived in Highland Park before moving to the Somerset section of Franklin 55 years ago. He was a 1942 graduate of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture. He retired in 1991 after eight years as a social worker for Somerset County. Prior to that, he had been an executive for the Dairyman's League, Manhattan, for 27 years.

He was a communicant of St. Peter's R.C. Church, New Brunswick. Surviving are his wife, the former Anne J. Machi; two sons, Timothy J.

III of Somerset and Thomas C. of Lancaster, a daughter, Judith Kane-Harkay of Sayreville, and four grandchildren. Cremation was private under the direction of Boylan Funeral Home, 188 Easton New Brunswick. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Middlesex Unit, 846 Main Fords, NJ 08863. KAPLAN AGE: 42 ELMWOOD PARK Millicent C. Kaplan died Tuesday at Valley Hospital, Ridgewood. She was 42. She was born in New York City and had lived there before moving to Elmwood Park 42 years ago. She retired from Temple Emanuel and the Temple Emanuel Hebrew School in Paterson.

She was a longtime trustee of the Elmwood Park Public Library. She was first appointed trustee in 1972 and led the board as president during the critical period of building a new library in 1977. She also served as vice president, secretary, treasurer and acting library director. Prior to serving as trustee, she supported the library as founder and activist of Friends of the Library and organizer of the library's Festival of the Arts. Recently, she and her family established the Kaplan Endowment Fund, which is used for children's programming at the Library.

She was a civic leader since moving to the Elmwood Park community in 1963. She was president of the Elmwood Park Historical Society for over two decades and a charter member of the Elmwood Park Chapter of Deborah. She also had been a member of the Townswomen and Parent Teachers Associations of the Gilbert Avenue School and Memorial High School. She was the recipient of Gov. Christine Whitman's Outstanding Volunteer Award in 1994 and received a Bergen County Executive's Volunteer of the Year Service Award in 1992.

Surviving are her husband, Melvin; two daughters, Felice Preefer of Edison and Samone Kaplan of Elmwood Park, and two grandchildren. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Louis Suburban Chapel, 13-01 Broadway, Fair Lawn. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Rochelle Park. MARY B. MARINO AGE: 72 NEW BRUNSWICK Mary B. Meny Marino died Saturday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. She was 72. She was born in New Brunswick and had lived in South Plainfield for many years before returning to New Brunswick.

She was a part-time waitress at Somerset Diner, Somerset, for 10 years. Two sisters are deceased: Ann Gribick in 1990 and Jane Hellman in 1998. Surviving are a son, Ross of South Plainfield; a daughter, Loretta Reynolds of Somerville; two brothers, Gene Meny of East Brunswick and Clifford Meny of Milltown; four sisters, Elizabeth McNally of Cheyenne, Dotty Fisher of South River, Loretta Meloick of North Brunswick and Joanne Rhoades of East Brunswick; two grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Gowen Funeral home, 233 Somerset New Brunswick.

Burial will follow at Franklin Memorial Park Mausoleum, North Brunswick. LILLIAN MEIROSE AGE: 89 MILLTOWN Lillian Meirose died Sunday at home. She was 89.

She was born in East Brunswick and had lived in Milltown since 1914. She earned a bachelor's degree from Rutgers University in 1930. She earned a teacher's certificate from Trenton State College. She retired in 1971 after 40 years as an educator and principal in the Milltown school system. She had worked in both the Joyce Kilmer School and the Parkview School.

She was a member of New Jersey Education Association and the National Education Association. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ. She had been a Sunday school Teacher. She was a member of the Women's Guild, Sara's Circle; a past president of the Milltown Senior Citizen's Club, and a recipient of the Milltown Citizen's Award.

A brother, William "Wood" Meirose; five sisters, Minnie, Emma Louise, Katheryn Edna, and Martha Waters; and several greatnieces and great-nephews are deceased. Surviving are her sister, Alice of Milltown; a nephew, Frederick Waters of Milltown, with whom she lived; and a niece, Mary Poulsen of Jackson. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Friday at Bronson Guthlein Funeral Home, Milltown. Burial will be at Van Liew Cemetery, North Brunswick.

Peter's University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was 92. He was born in New York City and had lived in South River for many years before recently moving to East Brunswick. He graduated from Rutgers University Law School. He practiced law in South River from 1937 until 1961.

He was the magistrate in South River from 1937 until 1950 and the borough attorney in South River from 1958 until 1961. He served as Middlesex County judge from 1961 until his retirement in 1976. He had been a member of the Middlesex County Bar Association, the NJ State Bar Association and a trustee of the Middlesex County Bar Association. He was a member and past president of the Congregation Anshe Emeth, South River. He was a member of the South River Lions Club, the South River Moose and the South River B.P.O.E.

Lodge 2033. He had been the head of the Heart Drive in South River, the United Jewish Appeal Campaign and the Israel Bond Campaign. His wife of 65 years, the former Gertrude Lefkowitz, died in March. His son, Peter, also is deceased. Surviving are a son, Gary of East Brunswick, and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Congregation Anshe Emeth Temple, South River. Burial will be at Congregation Cemetery, East Brunswick. GERTRUDE FREEMAN AGE: 88 PERTH AMBOY Gertrude Freeman died yesterday at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge Division. She was 88.

She was born in New York City and resided in Perth Amboy for 75 years. She assembled Army Air Forces planes at the General Motors, Linden, during World War II and was known as "Gertrude the Riviter." She was a substitute teacher with the Perth Amboy school system for many years. She was awarded the Life Master Bridge Player award in 1973. She was a life member of the American Contract Bridge League and a member of Hadassah. Her husband, Arnold, and a son, Richard, are deceased.

Surviving are a son, Robert of Matawan; a sister, Blanche Jacobson of Sarasota, Fla; a brother, Murray Guth of Fair Haven; two grandchildren, and one greatgrandchild. BYRNE AGE: 79 CARTERET Charles H. "Bud" Byrne died on Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Dayton, Ohio. He was 79. He was born in Rahway and had lived in Carteret for many years before moving to Carbondale, Ill. He then 1 moved Englewood, Ohio.

He retired after 38 years at Dayco Corp. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Battle of the Bulge. He was an accomplished musician and loved sailing and golf. Two sisters, Hazel Coyne and Dorothy Fleischmann, are deceased. Surviving are his wife, Lorraine; three sons, Timothy of Livonia, William of Charlotte, and Michael of Huber Heights, Ohio; and a daughter, Nancy Berryman of Golden, Colo.

Memorial services were held at the Kindred Funeral Home, Dayton, Ohio. REINA CHILDRESS AGE: 75 PERTH AMBOY Reina Geraldine Childress died Saturday at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Perth Amboy Division. She was 75. She was born in Perth Amboy and had lived there and in Reno, for 25 years before returning to Perth Amboy in 1970. She was a homemaker.

She earned an associate's degree in applied science in 1974 graduate from Middlesex County College. She was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and the Narcolepsy Association. Her husband, Robert died in 1969. Surviving are a son, Robert of Edison; two daughters, Niki Luther of Edison and Mona Keck of Perth Amboy; two sisters, Janice Friedman of Perth Amboy and Sydney Kaplowitz of the Whiting section of Manchester; two granddaughters, and a great gi Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Beth Mordecai Cemetery, Perth Amboy.

George W. Cook died from a heart attack yesterday at home. He was 67. He was born in New Brunswick and lived most of his life in Edison. He was a Marine veteran of the Korean War.

He was a member of the Honor Legion. He retired in 1989 after 29 years as a lieutenant with the Edison Police Department. He was a founding member of the Elks at Old Post Road, Edison. He was a gunsmith and a certified instructor of firearms with the Edison Firearms League. His wife, Carol M.

Braender, died on April 15. A son, George, and a brother, Douglas, also are deceased. Surviving are a son, Kevin of Edison; two daughters, Barbara Oppelt of Claremont, and Jacqueline Regan of Edison; a brother, Robert Davenport of Vero Beach, a sister, Lois of Edison, and eight grandchildren. She returned to North Brunswick three years ago. She retired after many years as owner and operator of MarDon's Beauty Shop, North Brunswick. He was 92. He was born in Newark and resided in Carteret for the past 50 years. He retired after many years at the Division of Motor Vehicles. He was a seaman first mate in the merchant marines during World War II, serving from 1941 until 1945. He graduated from the merchant marine academy.

His wife, Ethel, is deceased. Surviving is a nephew, James F. of Somerset. Services will be private. Arrangements are by Thomas J.

She was 95. She was born in Jersey City and had lived in Old Bridge before moving to Middletown. Her husband, John is deceased.

KATHRYN HASSETT AGE: 71 WOODBRIDGE Kathryn Aiello Hassett died Monday at home. She was 71. She was born in Jersey City and had lived in Fort Meyers, before moving to the Iselin section of Woodbridge 41 years ago. She retired 12 years ago after 25 years as an auto-parts distributor for 1001 Auto TNX, Rahway. She was appointed by the former Woodbridge Township Mayor Philip Cerria as Woodbridge Library committeewoman.

Her husband, William, died in August 1998. Surviving are a son, William of Lawrenceville; a daughter, Janet Mangold of the Murray Hill section of New Providence; a sister, Angie Beverige of Iselin, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be 9:15 a.m. Friday from Thomas J. Costello Funeral Home, Green Street and Cooper Avenue, Iselin, followed by a 10 a.m.

CHARLES W. JOHNSON AGE: 84 LAVALLETTE Charles William Johnson died Thursday at Hospice by the Sea in Boca Raton, Fla. He was 84. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and had lived in Lavallette and Boca Raton, Fla. He graduated in 1936 from Ohio State University with a bachelor of science degree in chemistry.

He was a member of Iota Chapter of Chi Phi fraternity. He was a chemist for 41 years at" E.I. du Pont de Nemours Co. He was a leader in research and a manager of development and production. He had a vital role in the development of aircraft finishes in World War II.

He held numerous patents in coatings, polymers and adhesives. He was a charter member and president of the Metuchen-Raritan Township Kiwanis Club. He also was a member and vice president of Red Bank Kiwanis Club. He was a member of the first. Planning Board in Tinton Falls.

He was a member of the first Environmental Protection Committee and the Emergency Management Advisory Committee, both in Lavallette. He was a member of the Lavallette Board of Education from 1978-1979 and the Lavallette Centennial and Heritage committees. He designed and built the cupola atop the Lavallette Gazebo and was active in its construction. He was a charter member of the Regular Republican Club of Lavallette and an associate member of the Lavallette First Aid Squad. He was chairman and CEO of Scientific Foundation for the Truth a member of the Lavallette Yacht Club, and had been a trustee of First Presbyterian Church of: Shrewsbury.

Surviving are his wife of 60. years, the former Ann Mullen; a daughter, Sue Johnson Hoffman of Boca Raton, and Lavallette; two brothers, Dr. James R. of Boca Raton and River Falls, and John H. of Saginaw, Mich.

Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday from Union Church of Lavallette, followed by light refreshments at the Lavallette First Aid Squad building. Donations in his memory may be made to Lavallette First Aid Squad. P.O. Box 334, Lavallette.
